Welcome to the Goombi Renewable Energy Hub

The Project

The Goombi Renewable Energy Hub (GREH) is a wind farm and battery energy storage system (BESS) project proposed for the locality of Goombi, in the Western Downs region of Queensland. The Project is located approximately 20 km to the east of Miles and 16 km to the west of Chinchilla.

The GREH will comprise of up to 106 wind turbines and a 600MW/2,400MWh BESS. The Project will connect into the existing transmission lines which run through the project site, via a new substation. Access to the Project area will be via the Warrego Highway, selected local council roads, and internal access tracks.

The GREH is currently in the development phase and we are undertaking technical and environmental assessments to determine the project’s potential to generate clean, renewable power, whilst co-existing with the region’s existing social and agricultural surroundings.

Why Goombi?

Goombi has excellent potential to host a renewable energy project due to its:

  • strong wind resource,

  • proximity to existing transmission infrastructure,

  • predominantly flat, disturbed land used for agriculture and coal seam gas development,

  • excellent transport access, and

  • proximity to skilled local workforces.

The design of the project will be determined through consideration of a range of technical and environmental considerations, in addition to community feedback and regulatory conditions.

Acknowledgement of Country

Goombi Energy Holdings wish to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of lands on which the project is proposed and their deep and enduring connections to Country and community. We pay our respect to Elders past and present and extend that respect to all First Nations Peoples today.

Why renewable energy?

  • Renewable energy is by far the cheapest available source of new electricity generation. As coal power stations close, this capacity needs to be replaced - renewables is the cheapest way to do this.

  • Wind farms produce clean, green energy from an inexhaustible resource - the wind.

  • The GREH will produce enough energy to power over 380,000 Queensland homes, and avoid emitting over 1.8 million tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere every year.

  • Projects like this provide significant short-term and long-term employment opportunities for locals, in addition to opportunities for local businesses and contractors.

  • As the climate becomes ever more unpredictable, the stable revenue provided by the project to host communities provides support and security.

  • Wind farms co-exist perfectly with agricultural operations and take up only 1-2% of the land area. Grazing and cropping can continue up to the base of the turbines, and new access tracks provide improved access across properties.
